City of Red Deer and RCMP to host community clean up events this week

Apr 30, 2025 | 4:38 PM

Later this week, the local RCMP and the City of Red Deer will help clean up litter in a pair of separate events.

On Friday, May 2, the Mayor and city councillors will clean up litter as part of the Green Deer Spring Cleanup Campaign from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Gary W. Harris Celebration Plaza and surrounding area.

The Green Deer Spring Cleanup Campaign runs annually from March 21 to May 31.

The city encourages all Red Deer residents to register for Green Deer and pick up litter in their neighbourhood.

By filling out the quick and easy online registration form, volunteers receive free litter cleanup supplies and a chance to win prizes.

Meanwhile, the Red Deer RCMP have organized an event on Saturday, May 3 where volunteers will help clean up provincial highways as part of the annual Highway Cleanup program.

Each spring, the province-wide initiative includes thousands of volunteers from across the province who work to help keep roadways clean of litter.

Volunteers will be wearing bright safety vests as they collect garbage along highways and the Red Deer RCMP is asking motorists to stay alert when passing clean up crews.

They’re encouraging drivers to consider the following:

  • Slow down when approaching volunteer crews.
  • Obey all posted signs and watch for volunteers near the roadway.
  • Be prepared for young participants — use extra caution.
  • Give workers plenty of space and remain patient while passing cleanup areas.
