The Optimist Club of Red Deer has donated refurbished bikes to elementary school students in the Red Deer Public School Division.

In total, the Club donated 67 bikes to students and families in need who attend Fairview Elementary School.

“This generous donation from the Optimist Club truly means the world to our students and their families,” said Vice Principal Greg Joslin. “Many of our families are new to the country, and still getting settled. A bike is something that brings joy, independence, and connection with others. We are incredibly grateful for this ongoing partnership. It’s a wonderful example of community in action.”

Some students who attend Fairview Elementary are newcomers to Canada and for many of them, receiving a new bike opens many doors for them including a greater sense of independence.

The elementary school is designated Red Deer Public’s English as an Additional Language (EAL) school.

The Optimist Club of Red Deer collects and refurbishes bikes all year long, and as a donation to Fairview Elementary, spent the entire winter refurbishing the bikes.

“When we see kids light up as they pick out a bike of their own, it’s a reminder of why we do this,” said Les Trevor, President of the Optimist Club of Red Deer. “It’s not just about bikes, it’s about building connections and showing families that they are supported here.”

Ken Williamson, an Optimist Club of Red Deer member, said they see the bike program as a way to welcome families, support children, and show that they are valued members of a community that cares.

“We believe every child should have the chance to feel like they belong. A bike can be a small step in helping a child feel more confident, more connected, and more at home in their community,” he explained.

The partnership between Fairview Elementary and the Optimist Club is one that continues to grow stronger each year. Together, they are helping ensure that every child has the chance to experience the joy of riding a bike.
