Steps for Life Walk to take place in Red Deer May 3

Apr 23, 2025 | 11:59 AM

The Steps for Life Charity Walk in honour of the victims of workplace tragedy is less than two weeks away.

Put on by Threads of Life, the event aims to raise awareness and funds for families and individuals affected.

It involves approximately 30 communities across Canada at the beginning of May. The event in Red Deer is set to take place May 3 at Bower Ponds where participants will take part in a five-kilometre walk.

Marketing and media coordinator for the event, Karla Klein said if people want to join in on the walk they should be there for 11 a.m. However, for those looking to volunteer or help out they’re asking for people to show up at 9 a.m.

There will also be multiple guest speakers including one from a family member who lost someone due to a workplace accident. It is a family friendly event with a bake sale and face painting for kids.

“You hear these stories and it’s terrifying knowing this could happen to anyone. If you can help just one person be a little bit safer, then it’s a job well done,” she said.

“As a family it’s hard. You don’t know how to deal with this injury, illness, or death of your loved one.”

The communities involved include Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie, Red Deer, Slave Lake, Kelowna, Vancouver, St. John’s, Halifax, Barrie, Durham Region, Hamilton, Kingston, Kitchener, London Region, Mississauga, Ottawa Region, Sarnia, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Windsor-Essex Region, Montreal, Regina, and Saskatoon.

Threads for Life is a Canadian charity committed to supporting people affected by workplace injury, illness, or death. They also bring awareness to help prevent future tragedies from occurring.

Klein said she’s been a part of the event for three years but after talking with many families, she’s seen the impact it’s made on people.

“A lot of families who’ve had something happen in the past and didn’t know about this organization have been able to get those supports they didn’t have access to before,” she said. “It’s not just for those people who have had something happen now, it’s for anybody who has ever had anything happen. It brings you a sense of community. Some of these things that have happened is the worst thing a family coud ever have to go through.”

“Just knowing there’s people out there that understand you and know what you’ve been through, brings a sense of healing,” adds Klein.

For those who want to help, they’re always looking for volunteers on their planning committee.

In addition, if you want to help raise money, they have registration open for those who want to participate in the walk.

An online auction will run from May 3 to 12 in benefit of the affected families and organizers are still accepting auction items to be submitted.
