A Chinook’s Edge educational assistant, Jackie Dewane, has received a King Charles III Coronation Medal for her service to youth in her community.

Dewane works at Sundre High School and was nominated for the award by Peter Davis, chair of the Alberta Air Cadet League, in “recognition of [her] contribution to the Air Cadet League of Canada and the Royal Canadian Air Cadet program.”

Davis said Dewane, “has been instrumental in the organization’s success. While Jackie is not one to seek out recognition for what she does, and she does a lot, I felt it was important that she be recognized for all that she does.”

Dewane started volunteering for the Air Cadet program 23 years ago, when her children first became involved. Since then, she has served in the local support group and joined the provincial committee. She also worked as an advisor to multiple squadrons, as an assistant central wing director and camp director. She is currently the central wing director.

“I have seen the benefits of this program for kids,” said Dewane. “I had three kids go through the program and saw such growth in them, especially with their confidence.”

She said the kids are the reason she contributes in the way she does, and that the highlight of receiving the award was that it occurred in front of the cadets she serves.
