Lacombe County avoids increase in municipal tax rate

Apr 12, 2025 | 2:38 PM

Lacombe County has officially approved the 2025 Tax Rate Bylaw to keep the same municipal tax rate as in 2024.

The decision reiterates the county’s commitment to not only fiscal responsibility, but also providing stability and affordability for all residents.

“The 2025 budget projected a zero per cent increase in the municipal tax rate for residential properties, demonstrating our continued dedication to supporting our residents, especially at a time when economic stability is crucial,” said Lacombe County Reeve Barb Shepherd.

Residents will see a zero per cent increase in the municipal tax rate for not only farmland but also residential and non-residential properties. However, the county says property owners may notice an increase in taxes on their 2025 returns.

The increase they explained is due to two factors out of their control, increases to residential property values and an increase in education taxes.

The county explained residential property assessments have risen year after year because of higher market values. This means some homeowners will pay more property tax even though municipal rates haven’t changed.

Meanwhile, the provincial government’s education requisition has increased by 6.25 per cent for residential and farmland properties and by 6.38 per cent for non-residential properties.

The taxes collected by the couty go towards a wide variety of services and infrastructure. This includes policing and public safety, education, infrastructure for projects like road maintenance and for public works such as the development of community facilities.

The taxes also go towards supporting senior services through the Lacombe Foundation Requisition, ensuring that the County’s elderly residents receive the care and support they need.

“Lacombe County continues to strategically balance fiscal prudence with community growth and service excellence,” explained County Manager Tim Timmons. “Our stable municipal tax rates underscore our efforts to manage taxpayer dollars responsibly while funding essential services and infrastructure to support sustainable community growth.”
