AHS reports 30 confirmed cases of measles in central zone after recent exposures

Apr 12, 2025 | 11:35 AM

Alberta Health Services has confirmed four new cases of measles in the central zone after recent exposures.

The additional exposures bring the zone to a total of 30 confirmed cases at this time.

AHS says at least one of the new individual cases was in a public setting while infectious and additional locations may be released.

People in the following locations during these dates and times may have been exposed to the disease:

April 2

Edmonton International Airport

1000 Airport Rd, Edmonton, Alta.

Sunwing check-in and international departures area

Exposure time: Approx. 7 a.m. –11 a.m. (MST)

Sunwing Flight No. 4387

From Edmonton International Airport to Cancun Mexico.

Exposure time: Approx. 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (MST)

This comes just 48 hours after AHS alerted the public of potential exposures in the central zone including at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Those who were at these locations born in or after 1970, and have less than two documented doses of the measles vaccine, are at risk. Officials encourage them to self-monitor for symptoms.

The disease is extremely contagious and symptoms include a fever of 38.3 Celsius or higher, a cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that appears three to seven days after the fever starts.

If symptoms do develop it’s important to stay home and call Health Link at 811 before visiting any healthcare facility.
