Apr 11, 2025 | 10:41 AM

It’s official.

The Red Deer Rebels will select seventh overall in the first round of the upcoming 2025 WHL Prospects Draft.

Their spot was solidified during the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft Lottery on Wednesday evening where the Regina Pats were awarded the first overall selection.

The Edmonton Oil Kings (from Moose Jaw) will select second overall followed by the Kelowna Rockets, Penticton Vees, Everett Silvertips (from Kamloops), and Vancouver Giants (from Wenatchee).

The Pats last picked first overall in 2020 and took Connor Bedard. This time around they’re expected to select homegrown prospect Maddox Schultz.

It’s be the first time the Rebels will pick inside the top 10 of the draft since they selected Ollie Josephson fifth overall in the first round of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.

Red Deer has selected seventh overall in the WHL Prospects Draft twice before selecting future captain Jayden Grubbe in 2018 and in 1998 when they picked defenceman and future Memorial Cup champion, Doug Lynch.

The Rebels hold a total of 14 picks in the draft including one pick in rounds one, three, and six, and two picks in rounds two, four, and five.

The Rebels were also awarded the sixth overall pick in round one and 42nd overall in round two of the 2025 U.S. Priority Draft. The Brandon Wheat Kings won the lottery and will select first overall followed by Moose Jaw and Edmonton.

The first round of the WHL Prospects Draft will be held on Wednesday, May 7 at 5 p.m. It will be streamed for free on Victory+. Meanwhile, the U.S. Priority Draft is set for Thursday, May 8 at 9 a.m. with the rest of the Prospects Draft to follow.
