FIVE PER CENT INCREASE

Apr 11, 2025 | 4:18 PM

Blackfalds’ town council has unanimously approved first reading of the 2025 Property Tax Rate Bylaw, which includes a five per cent tax increase.

In Blackfalds, the average home has been assessed at $352,000. Using this example, a tax rate increase of five per cent represents about $136 added to the municipal portion of property taxes, or $225 altogether when the provincial requisitions are considered.

The Provincial School Requisition will increase by $87, accounting for the increase to School Education Requisitions and last year’s over/under levy, and the Seniors Requisition amount will increase by $2.

The total tax to be collected municipally from property taxes after this increase is $13.57 million.

This year, town officials said overall property assessment values increased by $87.9 million and in 2024, new assessments increased by $41.6 million.

First reading passed during council’s regular meeting on Apr. 8, with second and third readings set for the next meeting of council, Apr. 22.
