Trial date set in alleged kidnapping with a firearm incident

A trial date has been set for one of three individuals charged in connection to an alleged kidnapping with a firearm incident in central Alberta earlier this year.

Silas Soosay, 25, a resident of Samson Cree Nation, is scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on July 28, 2025.

He faces counts of kidnapping with a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and four additional charges.

Mounties say the incident occurred in the Maskwacis area on Feb. 24, 2025.

That evening, RCMP report they were called to assist Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Samson Cree Nation with a male who had a gunshot wound.

When officers arrived, they determined the victim had allegedly been kidnapped and tied to a chair in the basement of a residence, as well as beaten and shot.

Maskwacis RCMP, an RCMP police helicopter and Police Dog Services were deployed and found three suspects who were then arrested. Officers also executed three search warrants and recovered a firearm suspected to be used in the alleged offence.

As a result, three residents of Samson Cree Nation were charged.

Clarence Northwest, 36, was charged with:

  • Kidnapping with a firearm
  • Discharge firearm with intent
  • Aggravated assault
  • Adult intimidation
  • Pursuit involved flight from Peace Officer and 13 additional charges

Soosay, and 18-year-old Chevez Louis were also charged with:

  • Kidnapping with a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm and four additional charges

Mounties all three suspects were taken before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody following the incident.

Northwest and Louis, meantime, have their matters returning to Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on April 17, 2025.
