Two people have been arrested and charged after a traffic stop by Innisfail RCMP that led to the seizure of drugs and weapons.

On Sunday, April 6 the RCMP stopped a vehicle for a mismatched license plate and saw a female walk away from the truck with a backpack.

Mounties say she returned to the truck while police were speaking to the driver. According to police, the male driver was found to be criminally prohibited from driving after he could not provide registration, insurance, or a bill of sale.

RCMP say the passenger and the driver were wanted on outstanding warrants and were arrested. Meanwhile, Mounties allege the man was found in possession of bear spray and money believed to be proceeds of crime.

Police say they then found the backpack that was previously carried away by the female passenger, along with cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin, which was seized.

As a result a 43-year-old man of no fixed address was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine; possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine; possession for the purpose of trafficking heroin; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited, uninsured motor vehicle, and improper use of licence plate.

RCMP say a judicial Interim hearing was held for him and he was remanded into custody. His next court appearance is April 10 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

The female passenger, a 24-year-old from Penhold was charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine; possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine; possession for the purpose of trafficking heroin; and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Police say a judicial Interim hearing was held for her and she was released by a Justice of the Peace. Her next court appearance is April 24 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.
