RCMP says human remains discovered in Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary

Apr 3, 2025 | 12:07 PM

Red Deer RCMP say human remains have been discovered within the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary.

Members responded to a call on March 29 at 4:30 p.m., where they confirmed the findings and turned it over to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Police say they continued to search area for anything additional, though they did not say where in the sanctuary — which is large — the remains were found.

The RCMP is working with the medical examiner to determine a potential identity and cause of death of the remains.

Meantime, posts on social media have alleged that a human arm was found, but police did not confirm that report.

There is no threat to the public at this time, Mounties add.

The Kerry Wood Nature Centre, which is located at the entrance to the sanctuary area, posted Thursday on social media about the incident.

“The Kerry Wood Nature Centre staff appreciates the public’s interest in the evolving situation in the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, and the ongoing care that Red Deerians demonstrate for the sanctuary. We are asking people to please stay out of the sanctuary while the authorities do their work,” they say.
“Professional searchers, County Protective Services, and the RCMP are onsite and have been oriented to the unique challenges presented by the sanctuary’s fragile environment. While off-trail access, pets, and wheeled transportation (bikes, skateboards, scooters) are never permitted in the sanctuary, we are reminding people that at this time, extreme care must be taken to safeguard the sanctuary’s unique spaces.”
They add further, asking people to let authorities do their work by staying out of the sanctuary until it’s been cleared. They also said they’d offer an update on their Facebook page when that happens.
