Mentors needed

BBBS of Red Deer & District temporarily pauses adding youth to waitlist

Apr 2, 2025 | 4:13 PM

The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Red Deer and District are temporarily pausing intakes to its waitlist due to the overwhelming request for mentorship.

They’re making the move in order to focus on finding mentors to the over 100 children currently on the list. However, referrals for families and youth with child and family services will continue to be accepted.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since I was matched with Hannah. At first, Hannah was a bit shy during our initial meetups, but as we spent more time together, her wonderful personality began to shine,” said one mentor in a media release.

“One of the most memorable moments was during a swimming outing. I witnessed Hannah’s kindness and compassion firsthand. There was a young boy who was hesitant to go down the water slide, clearly scared. Without hesitation, Hannah approached him, offering encouragement and reassurance. She even demonstrated how fun and safe it was, helping him overcome his fear. Seeing Hannah’s empathy and bravery in that moment made me incredibly proud to be her big sister. Our journey together has been filled with such heartwarming experiences, and I look forward to many more.”

In addition, the BBBS of Red Deer & District are looking for mentors to help bring out the potential in youth within the program.

They’re matched with a mentee based on interests and personality and is done that way to ensure there can be a genuine connection between the pair.

After the mentor is put through a screening process, they then meet some of the children on the waiting list to see what kind of connections could be formed if they’re chosen.

The mentor and mentee will typically meet multiple times a month to do whatever activities are agreed on. Mentors usually dedicate four to six hours a month to take part in activities and connect with the child.

For more information on becoming a mentor visit the Youth HQ website or by contacting Janessa at janessam@youthhq.ca or 403-342-6500.
