École Secondaire Notre Dame High School announced the second annual ND Unified Cougar Classic is fast approaching.

The celebration of inclusivity and sportsmanship is set for Thursday, April 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school’s gymnasium.

Organizers say it’s more than just a sports event, but rather a celebration of the strength and unity that sports can create.

“We are incredibly excited to host the 2nd Annual ND Unified Cougar Classic,” said Alison Snow, Unified Coach. “Last year’s event was a huge success, and we are eager to build on that momentum, further strengthening our commitment to inclusivity and providing meaningful opportunities for all students.”

The classic is all about fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where students with and without intellectual disabilities come together to compete as a team.

The event focuses on the core principles of Unified Sports which includes promoting camaraderie, respect, and the joy of athletic participation.

This year there will be 136 participants from five high schools in central Alberta. The teams will participate in two sports, three-on-three basketball and bean bag toss.

Unified sports teams, composed of athletes with intellectual disabilities and partners (students without intellectual disabilities) will demonstrate the power of teamwork and mutual support. Each team is carefully selected to ensure every participant has an opportunity to contribute.
