Sylvan Lake Wranglers knock off defending champs to win HJHL title

After two straight years of losing to the Okotoks Bisons in the Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL) Finals, the Sylvan Lake Wranglers are champions.

On Thursday evening, the Wranglers defeated the Bisons 2-1 in Game 4 at the Murray & Piper Arena in Okotoks to win the best-of-five series, 3-1.

In Okotoks. the Wranglers went down a goal in the first period but in the second frame they took their first lead and held onto it thanks to a pair of goals from Aydden Shaw and Owen Callow.

Sylvan Lake goaltender Kaden Toussaint had a championship-winning performance turning away 45 of 46 shots.

Earlier in the series, the Wranglers won Games 1 and 2 by scores of 4-2, and 5-0. In Game 3 in Sylvan Lake, the Bisons avoided the sweep with a 6-5 victory at the Nexsource Centre.

The Bisons were playing for their fourth straight HJHL league title after beating the Cochrane Generals in 2022, and the Wranglers in the 2023 and 2024.

The Wranglers playoff journey will continue at the Hockey Alberta Junior B Provincial Championship in Morinville from April 2-6.

While there, they’ll face off against the top Junior B talent from across Alberta.
