RCMP report poor road conditions across the province

The Alberta RCMP are advising the public to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.

Road conditions pose significant hazards across the province, including in central Alberta.

According to Alberta 511, this morning several highways throughout the region are either completely or partly covered in snow with icy sections.

At 5 a.m., Alberta 511 reported the QEII southbound lanes near Highway 12 were closed, but as of 7 a.m., one lane was reopened. However, drives can expect delays while crews clear the area.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, periods of snow up to two centimetres are expected today and into tonight in the Red Deer area. On Saturday morning, periods of snow up to two to four centimetes is also expected.

RCMP also noted Friday that on Thursday, members across Alberta responded to 147 MVCs, fortunately with zero fatalities.

Safety tips from RCMP:

  • Ensure all windows, side mirrors and lights are properly and completely cleared of snow.
  • Help others see you, may sure your lights are turned on.
  • Reduce your speed and give yourself more time to slow and stop.
  • Listen to the radio or check 511 Alberta for updated road and weather reports.
  • Plan extra time to get to your destination.
  • Be prepared for changing road and weather conditions. Pack blankets or a winter survival kit, especially if you are planning a trip outside of town.
