Shotokan Karate Club of Red Deer wins big on global stage

Athletes of the Shotokan Karate Club of Red Deer returned from representing Canada on the world stage with some hardware.

The World Shoto Cup, which took place last September in London, England, featured athletes from around the world to compete in a display of skill, dedication, and sportsmanship.

Red Deer sent seven of their athletes including Jonard Corotan, Geo Gutierrez, Cody Corotan, Emma Gutierrez, Sofia Reyes, Fiona Nelson, and Rahul Channan to the event. It was also the first time in the club’s 30-year history that they’ve sent anyone to the World Shoto Cup.

As a result, they earned two gold, one silver, and one bronze.

The club earned there way there after winning multiple medals at the International Shotokan Karate Federation’s Canadian National Championship in Vancouver last May.
