Four Chinook’s Edge School Division (CESD) students will represent central Alberta in the Skills Alberta provincial competitions coming up in May.

The opportunity comes as a result of their placements at regional Skills Alberta competitions in Red Deer and Calgary.

“We are incredibly proud of the students and their participation at the Skills Alberta regional competitions,” said Brianne Fletcher, Career Connections Coordinator. “Special thanks to their shop teachers and college instructors who have worked hard instructing and supporting students preparing for the competition, and helped build their confidence to enter. It’s a great opportunity for students made possible by our great teachers.”

The four qualifying CESD students are:

  • Auston Wright: Grade 11 student attending Hugh Sutherland School in Carstairs, received gold in the carpentry category.
  • Logan Swanson: Grade 11 student attending Didsbury High School, received silver in the welding category.
  • Johan Eriksson: Grade 12 student attending Didsbury High School, received silver in the carpentry category.
  • Ryder Mierke: Grade 11 student attending Didsbury High School, received bronze in the carpentry category.

Other performances of note included:

  • Salvador Vermeulen: Grade 11 student attending École Olds High School, received bronze in the welding category.
  • Levi Reese: Grade 10 student attending Didsbury High School, received silver in the video production category.

Swanson, who is headed to provincials, said the competition was challenging.

“Pressure makes diamonds,” he commented. “I’m glad I got to shine.”

Three other CESD students competed in the welding category in addition to those who placed: Jaren Leaver from Didsbury High School, Cale Graville from École Olds High School and Quinn Goodwin from Hugh Sutherland School.

Additionally, Jaidyn Gordon, of Delburne School, competed in the cabinet making category.

Skills Alberta is part of a national association, Skills Canada. There are 32 categories in the competition, including computer animation, auto body repair, graphic design, electronics, photography, hairstyling, robotics and web design.

The provincial competition takes place in Edmonton from May 7-8.
