Rebels drop regular-season finale in Edmonton

Mar 23, 2025 | 6:56 PM

The Red Deer Rebels wrapped up the 2024-25 season on Sunday falling 4-1 to the Edmonton Oil Kings on the road.

Forward Kalan Lind scored the lone goal for the Rebels and goaltender Chase Wutzke made 34 saves on 38 shots.

The bright spot for the Rebels on Sunday came on the penalty kill as they held the Oil Kings scoreless on 11 powerplay opportunities. The Rebels were also halted on two powerplay chances.

Red Deer fell just short of their goal of making the WHL playoffs finishing in ninth place in the Eastern Conference with a 26-34-6-2 record. It’s the first time they’ve missed the postseason since the 2013-14 season.

After both teams were held scoreless in the opening frame, the Oil Kings exploded on offence with four goals in the second period. The Rebels also managed to get on the board.

It all started with a goal from Cage Smith, who scored his second of the year assisted by Joe Iginla.

Midway through the period, Edmonton’s Blake Fiddler scored a shorthanded marker to extend their lead.

However, the Rebels scored their first of the game nearly four minutes later off the stick of forward Kalan Lind. He scored his 12th of the season while on one knee in the left slot.

With 3:49 left in the second, Oil Kings Ethan MacKenzie reinstated their two-goal lead and 37 seconds after that, Miroslav Holinka scored his 19th goal this season to lead 4-1.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third period but a total of 55 penalty minutes were handed out in the final frame, including game misconducts to Derek Thurston and Gracyn Sawchyn.

The Oil Kings will now face the Prince Albert Raiders in the first round of the 2025 Playoffs. Meanwhile, the Rebels will complete their exit interviews on Monday and go their separate ways for the offseason.
