Police respond to hold and secure incident at École Lacombe Junior High School

Mar 20, 2025 | 11:10 AM

École Lacombe Junior High School went into hold and secure yesterday following an incident outside of the school.

In a letter to parents, Principal James Matthie wrote an individual, who was not a student at the school, was on school property on Wednesday and was seen banging on the front door while holding a weapon.

Staff at the school called police who quickly responded. In a media release from the Lacombe Police Service, they explained a young male displayed a knife and caused damage to the door. At the same time, there was an altercation involving a group of young males off of school grounds, which continued onto school property.

As a result there were no injuries and one male youth was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, mischief – damage to property, and uttering threats.

As a precautionary measure, Matthie added the school was placed in lock down followed by hold and secure once they found out the individual was outside the building.

“I understand that situations like this can be concerning, and I want to reassure you that the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Our staff and students followed emergency protocols effectively, and we are grateful for the swift response from law enforcement,” he wrote.

“If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school office at 403-782-3812. We appreciate your support in keeping our school a safe and secure environment for all students.”

The police added that the matter is now before the courts.
