One of two sentenced in central Alberta stolen vehicle police chase

One of two people charged following a police pursuit in central Alberta last year has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail.

Jeff Edward Medd, 41, of Leduc County, was sentenced to 910 days behind bars in Wetaskiwn Court of Justice on March 13, 2025. However, he was given credit for 179 days of pre-trial custody, leaving him a total of 731 days or a little over two years left to serve.

Medd plead guilty to theft of a motor vehicle, assaulting peace officer with weapon, and flight from peace officer, in the incident last fall.

His co-accused, Corey Garrett Peers, 36, of Wainwright, AB, is scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice from Nov. 12-14, 2025.

Alberta RCMP spokesperson, Cst. Cory Riggs, says the Wetaskiwin RCMP Crime Reduction Unit was doing proactive patrols on Oct. 10, 2024, when they located a vehicle towing a trailer displaying a stolen license plate.

The vehicle, a black pick-up truck, was travelling southbound on the QEII Highway.

RCMP attempted to pull the vehicle over, which is when, it’s said, one of the occupants crawled out through the sunroof at highway speeds to start unloading items and debris from the trailer. According to police, the suspects then unhooked the trailer while still driving, in an effort to halt police from pursuing them.

RCMP then opted to follow at a distance to ensure safety.

RCMP say the suspect vehicle then departed the QEII onto a rural road, in the Lacombe County area, at which point a tire deflation device was successfully deployed.

The suspects are said to have then stolen another vehicle, this time a silver pick-up truck, from a farmer’s field.

Members once again used a spike belt successfully, and about one hour after initially responding, officers were able to arrest two people on a rural property on Range Road 270 in Lacombe County.

Rimbey, Ponoka and Blackfalds RCMP detachments, as well as Red Deer and provincial Crime Reduction Units, all provided assistance.

• 320.17 cc Failure to stop after accident
• S 320.13(1) dangerous operation x2
• S 145 (5)(a) cc Failure to comply with order
• S 117.01(1) Possession contrary to order x2
• S. 320.17 cc Flight from peace officer
• s. 355(a) cc possession of property obtained by crime – greater than $5,000

Peers was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody.
