Winter weather not finished yet in Prairie provinces: The Weather Network

The Weather Network has issued its spring forecasts for the months March, April and May — and the Prairies may be in for winter weather a while longer.

While precipitation is expected to be normal for the upcoming spring season in Alberta, temperatures will be below normal, the network reported.

Spring-type weather started early in the Prairies this year but The Weather Network says winter is not finished yet.

The prairie provinces are expected to be on the, “chilly side of seasonal” for the remainder of March and into April with punches of winter weather.

The spring season is expected to finish strong across Canada with near normal or above normal temperatures arriving during May.

“La Niña is fading and the back of winter has been broken, but that does not mean that we are completely finished with winter weather just yet,” said Chris Scott, chief meteorologist at The Weather Network, in a news release.

“We do not have a strong El Niño or La Niña event this year, so that should allow for a typical spring across most of Canada,” Scott added.

“However, we need to remember that spring in Canada is a volatile season that rarely takes us on a direct path from winter to summer. Changeable temperatures are normal and that usually includes some late winter-like weather at times.”

There is typically an abundance of rain and snow during spring and they expect that most of Canada will have near normal or above normal precipitation totals for the season.

However, the network is concerned that parts of western Canada will trend rather dry heading into early summer.
