Red Deer’s Les Waite was awarded the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal for his years of service to BGC Red Deer & District Club.

Formerly known as the Boys and Girls Club, Waite began in the program as a youth spending many of his summers at Camp Alexo, where he was inspired by his camp leaders to one day become a staff member.

He joined BGC and Youth HQ in central Alberta in 1997 and has helped it grow. His hard work and creativity, no matter the event or program, has helped create opportunities and life-long impacts to youth in the region.

“When he was a camper and I was the BGC Program Manager, Les once told me he would have my job one day” said John Johnston, who has worked with Les for many years and nominated him for the award. “He was right, and the BGC program has grown in Red Deer so much over the years, thanks to his dedication to the work.”

The King Charles III Coronation Medal is presented to those who made significant contributions to Canada, their province, or their community. Some have also made a difference abroad that brings credit to Canada.
