SCAN shuts down Innisfail property for alleged drug activity

Mar 11, 2025 | 3:05 PM

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit of the Alberta Sheriffs has closed down a property in Innisfail for alleged drug activity.

After police acquired a court order against the owner of 4127 49A Avenue, they shut down the property for 90 days, which began at noon on Tuesday.

All people are ordered to vacate the premises and all leases or tenancy agreements were terminated, effective immediately.

“This is another great example of the collaboration between SCAN and the RCMP in their unwavering commitment to protecting Alberta’s neighbourhoods,” said Mike Ellis, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services in a media release. “The closure of this drug house in Innisfail reflects our dedication to the safety and well-being of Albertans. We will continue to do whatever it takes to keep our province safe. SCAN’s closure of this notorious property is a huge win for the residents of Innisfail.”

The community safety order, which was acquired by the Court of King’s Bench, prevents all people from the property until the closure period ends on June 9.

The property will be boarded up, fenced, and all locks will be changed. Meanwhile, SCAN members will continue to monitor the property while the investigation continues.

“Collaborating with local partners like the RCMP is making a significant difference for community safety across Alberta. SCAN units throughout the province remain dedicated to fighting crime and protecting the safety and well-being of all residents,” said Michael Dirkson, inspector, SCAN.

SCAN reports that since May 16, 2023 they’ve recieved four complaints related to drug and criminal activity at this property. Those reporting the complaints said there was heavy foot and vehicle traffic at the property.

From February 2022 to July 2024, the Innisfail RCMP went to the property 53 times for various calls.

In June 2024, Innisfail RCMP members found evidence that indicated the property was frequently used for drug related activities after they executed a search warrant under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act at the property.

“Last year alone, the RCMP executed three search warrants at this residence, searching for both stolen property and drugs. The Innisfail RCMP has a strong partnership with the Alberta Sheriffs and appreciates their work in assisting to target known criminals in our area. We are supportive of all tools that work towards limiting crime in our community,” said Ian Ihme, staff sergeant, Detachment Commander of the Innisfail RCMP.
