Red Deer city council sets public hearing date to explore Municipally Controlled Corporation
Red Deer’s city council has scheduled a public hearing for June 23 to discuss the possibility of transitioning the City’s electric utility to a Municipally Controlled Corporation (MCC) model.
Setting a public hearing date is a legislated part of this exploration process and prompts administration to create a business plan for the model to give council more information about what the change could look like.
Red Deer began reevaluating the makeup of its electric utility in 2021. In July 2024, city council directed administration to prepare a transition plan outlining budget, and other implications associated with creating an MCC as part of the exploration process.
While council is pursuing more information about this option, it has in no way committed to creating an MCC. Following the public hearing, it will still have the option to divest and sell the utility to a private provider, retain it as a city department and allocate more resources to it, or pursue an MCC.
