Red Deer District Chamber advocating for business-friendly solutions to tariffs

The Red Deer District Chamber says is it extremely disappointed in the wake of news about tariffs imposed on Canada by the United States.

In case you missed it, here’s a breakdown from the Canadian Press explaining what’s going on with this simmering trade war.

The local chamber says it stands in solidarity with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the federal government, and Alberta’s premier in their unified stance against tariffs it calls, “unjustified.”

“These tariffs threaten the stability of our local industries, many of which rely on cross-border trade,” said Scott Robinson, CEO of the Red Deer District Chamber. “While it is clear to us that the federal government had no choice but to impose retaliatory measures, we remain clear, tariffs are simply bad economic policy, and the impacts will be felt by businesses on both sides of the border.”

The chamber is engaged with the Canadian Chamber about advocating to all levels of government to swiftly come up with business-friendly solutions.

The Canadian Chamber issued its statement Monday, ahead of the tariffs’ implementation.

“Businesses on both sides of the border have already been damaged by the uncertainty coming from President Trump’s drip-drip-drip of tariff threats. We have no reason to expect this will change any time soon. Whether it’s tomorrow, next week, or in April, there has already been damage to the relationship and to our economies,” stated Matthew Holmes, executive vice president, international, and chief of public policy.

“Either way, we will have a long road back to Canada and the U.S. being trusted economic partners again. Businesses can’t just switch their whole model to avoid tariffs and then go back again, depending on what politicians decide on any given day.”
