LAUNCHING 2025-26 SCHOOL YEAR

Red Deer Public holding open house for new firefighting program

Mar 3, 2025 | 12:36 PM

High school students and their families are invited to an open house of Red Deer Public Schools’ Fire Academy, a new program designed for Grade 11 and 12 students interested in firefighting or emergency services.

The open house will give families an inside look at the program, which the division says combines classroom learning with real-world, hands-on firefighting training and experience at Red Deer’s Ed Howell Emergency Services training facility.

The academy is also an opportunity for students to earn high school credits while gaining accreditation and practical skills that will prepare them for a career in firefighting.

The open house will be held on March 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Fire Station Three (100 Lees Street). Organizers note that parking at the station is limited and ask attendees to find on street parking or a nearby lot if possible.

Attendees will have a chance to get detailed info about the Fire Academy, learn about program requirements, see the gear and meet the professionals leading the program.

“The Fire Academy is an exciting opportunity for students to gain real-world experience while still in high school,” said Dan Lower, Deputy Superintendent. “We encourage anyone interested to come and learn more about this incredible program.”

The Fire Academy is launching in the 2025-2026 school year and applications will open following the open house. There is a limit of 20 seats available per year to ensure high quality training.

The academy is a partnership between Red Deer Public Schools and the City of Red Deer Emergency Services.
