TRI-MUNICIPAL PROJECT

Blackfalds council supports study into regional recreation facility

Feb 26, 2025 | 10:33 AM

Blackfalds’ town council has unanimously supported a resolution to participate in an Alberta Community Partnership (ACP) grant application with the City of Lacombe and Lacombe County to explore the feasibility of a regional recreation facility.

The ACP grant deadline is Oct. 1, and has the potential to cover 100 per cent of project costs up to $200,000.

If awarded, the municipalities would launch a study into the feasibility of building a tri-municipal recreation facility in Lacombe County, intended to address ice time shortages and a desire for year-round pool access in the communities. This would also reduce cost burdens to each municipality through cost-sharing.

“I think this is great due diligence to know whether or not there’s a way that we can work together with the City and County of Lacombe on something that would benefit all three of our communities and would ultimately be a huge cost savings for the facility,” said Mayor Jamie Hoover in support of the application.

The City of Lacombe has been designated as the managing partner and as such, is expected to submit the grant application on behalf of the partnership, enter the grant agreement, receive and manage the grant funds on behalf of the partnership and report to the ministry on project expenses and outcomes.

Blackfalds’ council passed the resolution during its regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 25. The City of Lacombe’s council passed a resolution outlining its support and intention to be the managing partner on Jan. 27, and Lacombe County’s council passed its support resolution on Jan. 30.

There are no financial implications to the town attached to this decision.
