Red Deer Curling Centre celebrates 125 years

Feb 20, 2025 | 3:51 PM

The Red Deer Curling Centre is celebrating a major milestone this month.

On Feb 21-22, they’ll hold a bonspiel and social at the Pidherney Centre to celebrate its 125th anniversary of being a fixture in Red Deer and central Alberta.

The Red Deer Curling Centre is the largest club in Alberta with over 900 members, 19 curling leagues, and various bonspiels that take place throughout the season.

They welcome curlers of all skill levels and ages whether they want to play competitively or recreationally.

The Red Deer Curling Club began in 1898 on a small outdoor rink on Morrison Street and held their first game later that year.

When additions were needed by 1913, and no available funding from the city, members took charge by forming a stock company, selling $4,000 in shares; enough to fund the expansion. The rink remained in this location for the next 40 years.

The club moved to its present location, now known as the Pidherney Centre, in 1954 on what was then known as the Exhibition Grounds, with expansion and renovations completed in 2013 to the present 12 sheets of ice.

The Pidherbey Centre is the largest in Alberta with the 12 sheets of ice, just one of three this size in Canada.
