It was a record breaking afternoon at Sockey Day on Monday at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

That’s according to United Way Central Alberta who reported an impressive 5,138 pairs of socks were thrown on the ice at the Red Deer Rebels game against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Officials say this helped them surpass last year’s total of 4,813 pairs.

“This year’s response has been a true reflection of our community’s ongoing commitment to supporting community needs,” said UWCA CEO, Chelsea O’Donoghue, adding that all collected socks will go directly to local agencies across central Alberta to benefit individuals and families in need.

“Sockey Day continues to be a powerful way to raise awareness around local basic needs, and it’s heartening to see so many businesses, organizations, schools, and community members come together to make a meaningful impact.”

United Way Central Alberta reports that over 20 community partners played major roles in building awareness leading up to the event. One of which was a friendly competition between 13 local bank branches including BMO, Scotiabank, and Servus Credit Union. Scotiabank led the way with collecting 1,577 pairs of socks.

Organizers also want to extend a special appreciation to the Red Deer Rebels who helped contribute to the events success.

“Over 38,000 central Albertans are struggling to meet their basic needs, and the rising cost of living is adding even more strain,” O’Donoghue said. “Sockey Day is a testament to what we can achieve when the community comes together. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference.”

Funds raised through United Way’s annual campaign stay local, supporting community investments in critical programs that provide access to basic needs, mental health services, and brighter futures for all central Albertans.

Last year, they helped more than 12,100 people and families.
