Preliminary hearing scheduled for man charged in central Alberta homicide

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a man charged in a central Alberta murder last year.

26-year-old Chervaine Saddleback, a resident of Maskwacis, AB, is scheduled to find out in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on July 29, 2025, if his case has enough evidence to go to trial.

He was arrested by the RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) on Sept. 28, 2024, and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 25-year-old Wyatt Omeasoo, also of Maskwacis.

It was on Jan. 28, 2024, at 11:30 a.m., when Maskwacis RCMP were called to assist EMS with a 25-year-old male. Mounties say the male was transported to hospital where he was declared deceased. Police say the circumstances of the victim’s death were considered suspicious.

According to RCMP, an autopsy determined the manner of death to be a homicide.

Background: Jan. 29, 2024

On Jan. 28, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. Maskwacis RCMP received a report of an injured individual on 6 Mile Road, North of Highway 611. Emergency crews transported the victim to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The circumstances of the victim’s death are considered suspicious.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.

The victim has been taken to the Edmonton Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and an autopsy is anticipated today.
