Rebels fall to Hurricanes on the road

The Red Deer Rebels pushed in the third period but came up short in a 3-1 loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes on the road Wednesday.

Red Deer outshot their opponents 31-28 at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena but lost the special teams battle in the set back. On three powerplay attempts, the Rebels were held scoreless. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes notched two powerplay markers on four opportunities.

The Hurricanes got on the board first just 5:40 into the game on the powerplay. Forward Kash Andresen was found in front of the net to cap off a passing play from Kooper Gizowski and Shane Smith.

Red Deer outplayed the Hurricanes for most of the second period outshooting them 13-9 but were unable to find the equalizer.

Instead, the Hurricanes made it 3-0 with a pair of goals.

The Hurricanes insurance goal came from defenceman Caden Price who fired a shot past the goaltender from the left circle off the feed from captain Brayden Yager over 11 minutes into the period.

Nearly seven minutes later, Yager scored on the powerplay from just inside the blue line with a shot that made its way through traffic and past rookie netminder Peyton Shore.

In the third period, the Rebels scored their first of the game off the stick of Matthew Gard for his 12th of the season, assisted by captain Ollie Josephson and Beckett Hamilton.

Shore made 25 saves on 28 shots and Hurricanes netminder Koen Cleaver made 30 saves on 31 shots.

With the loss, the Rebels remain 10 points back of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

They’ll look to get back in the win column on Friday night at the Centrium against the Edmonton Oil Kings at 7 p.m. The Rebels will host the Oil Kings again on Monday at 2 p.m. on Family Day.
