RDP Athletics recap: Jan. 31-Feb. 2

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Basketball teams dropped their games to the SAIT Trojans. The RDP Queens Hockey team defeated the NAIT Ooks twice. The Kings Hockey team earned two victories over the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. The Queens Volleyball team came up short against the Trojans. The Kings Volleyball squad solidified a pair of wins over the SAIT Trojans. The RDP Queens Futsal team picked up a win at the first Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Futsal South Regional. The Kings Futsal squad was unbeaten in Lethbridge.

Basketball

Queens vs Trojans | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 31

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team was downed 85-50 by the first place SAIT Trojans. Rachel Harvey led the Queens with 16 points. Both Jayden Demchuk (Practical Nurse Diploma) and Salome Nuako (Open Studies) scored 11 points.

RDP Queens at SAIT | Saturday, February 1

The fourth place RDP Queens (10-7) were defeated 86-64 by the Trojans (16-1) in Calgary. The Queens shot 51 per cent from the field.

RDP Kings vs SAIT Trojans | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 31

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team was dropped 78-64 by the SAIT Trojans. Chilliwack’s Cole Wicker had a team-leading 16 points for

RDP Kings at SAIT Trojans | Saturday, February 1

The sixth place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (6-11) were defeated 96-82 by the fourth seed Trojans (10-7). Wicker (Bachelor of Education) scored a game-high 32 points. The Kings shot 46.7 per cent from three-point range.

Volleyball

RDP Queens at SAIT Trojans | Friday, January 31

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team was edged by the SAIT Trojans in five sets (25-13, 19-25, 18-25, 25-17 and 8-15). Red Deer’s Lauren Junck (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) contributed 13 kills (0.323), six digs, two stuff blocks and one assist.

The second place RDP Queens (11-4) were defeated by the fourth seed Trojans (9-8) in three sets (11-25, 21-25 and 22-25). The Queens, Trojans, Ambrose University Lions and Briercrest College Clippers have already solidified the top four spots in the ACAC Women’s Volleyball South Division, qualifying for the postseason.

The Kings Volleyball team swept the SAIT Trojans (25-23, 25-15 and 25-19). Colby Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce) led the Kings with 19 kills.

Kings vs Trojans | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, February 1

The first place RDP Kings (14-1) picked up a four-set decision over the fifth seed Trojans (7-10) at home (25-20, 25-15, 22-25 and 25-15). The Kings and Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks have sealed two of the fourth playoff spots from the South Division.

Hockey

Queens vs Ooks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 31

The RDP Queens Hockey team defeated the NAIT Ooks 2-1. Kyla Hansel (Pharmacy Technician Diploma) and Arilyn Toews (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) scored for the Polytechnic. Tora Ward made 41 saves in the Queens’ net.

Queens at NAIT Ooks | Saturday, February 1

The third place Queens (12W-6L-1 OTL) blanked the Ooks 4-0. Camryn Ward scored twice for RDP. Julie Wagner and Mia McGregor also found the back of the net. Izzy Palumbo, a fourth-year netminder, earned the shutout.

The NAIT Ooks (15W-6L-0 OTL) rank second in the league.

RDP Kings at University of Alberta Augustana Vikings | Friday, January 31

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team defeated the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings 3-2 in Camrose. Dawson Leroux (Bachelor of Business Administration) scored twice for the Kings. Tanner Sklaruk added one goal. Langley’s Kristian Lyon made 25 saves in the Kings’ net.

The third place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (11W-6L-2 OTL-1 SOL) solidified a 5-2 decision over the sixth place Vikings (6W-10L-2 OTL-0 SOL) at home. Leroux, a second-year forward from Lethbridge, contributed two goals. Nathan DeGraves, Easton Haygarth and Kasey Hiemstra added singles for the Polytechnic. Lyon turned aside 43 Vikings’ shots.

The Kings have already earned a spot in the playoffs.

Futsal

ACAC Futsal South Regional #1 | Lethbridge Polytechnic | February 1-2

  • Queens 4 – Ambrose University Lions 3
  • RDP Queens 1 – Lethbridge Kodiaks 7
  • Red Deer Polytechnic Queens 0 – SAIT Trojans 6
  • Queens 3 – Medicine Hat College Rattlers 4

The RDP Queens (2-3-1) are tied with the Olds College Broncos (2-3-1) for fourth spot in the ACAC Women’s Futsal South Division. After both regionals, the top three teams from each division will advance to the ACAC Futsal Championship.

The Kings (4-1-1) rank second in the South Division. Calgary’s Jaxon Fernandes, a second-year member of the Kings, was a key contributor to the success of his team, scoring a total of six goals.
