Red Deer Rebels bounce back with 3-0 win against Regina Pats

Jan 31, 2025 | 9:01 PM

The Red Deer Rebels have picked themselves up again with a 3-0 win against the Regina Pats in the Brandt Centre on Jan. 31.

Rebels started the first period strong with a goal by Talon Brigley at 1:27, his sixth of the season; Doogan Pederson and Brett Calhoon assisted the 1-0 lead.

Calhoon followed up his assist with a roughing minor 30 seconds later and sent the Pats to the power play, but they couldn’t find the mark.

Red Deer faced the same issue after Regina’s Cohen Klassen took a kneeing minor at 10:48, the team failing to score on the power play.

With five minutes left in the frame, Rebel Keaton Dowhaniuk got sent to the box for tripping and just after his time was up, the Pats’ Kristian Lacelle took his place for high sticking.

With a 1-0 lead, the first period finished with the Rebels outshooting the Pats 9-6.

A slower start to the second period picked up at 5:10 when Red Deer’s Kalan Lind put home a rebound off the goalie in his fifth goal of the season. With assistance from Doogan Pederson and Ty Coupland, they bumped the team to 2-0.

Regina took the man advantage again at 6:57 when Talon Brigley tripped his way to the box, to no effect. A second chance came around three minutes later as Jake Missura took a minor for interference.

The Pats returned the favour at 12:42 with Reese Hamilton getting his own interference call.

Both teams pushed to the end of the frame, but with just under three minutes left, Matthew Gard got slammed into the corner by the Pats’ Dayton Deschamps with a check from behind.

Gard got up to drop the gloves and a quick fight landed the two players out with major fighting penalties, plus unsportsmanlike conduct, as well as interference and game misconduct for Deschamps.

Red Deer lost another player at 18:38 after goalie interference from Samuel Drancak.

The Rebels carried their 2-0 lead into the third frame, but Regina led the second period with 10-6 shots on goal.

The 10th power play of the game came when period three was nearly halfway over at 8:58, after Red Deer had too many men on the ice, but they held up their defence against the Pats’ efforts to score.

At 17:23, Regina pulled their goalie in an effort to turn the game around. Derek Thurston took the opportunity to sink one last goal, his sixth of the season, into the empty net from 190 feet. He was assisted by Matthew Gard.

Red Deer finished the matchup with a 3-0 win and leading shots on goal 6-2 in the third frame and 21-18 overall.

The game’s three stars went to Peyton Shore, Kelton Pyne and Doogan Pederson.

The Rebels head right into their final road game of the weekend tomorrow, Feb. 1, against the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Moose Jaw Events Centre. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. MST and you can listen live on 106.7 Rewind Radio.
