RDP Athletics recap: Jan. 23-25

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Indoor Track team placed first and the Kings finished fourth at the ACAC Indoor Track Running Room Grand Prix #1. The RDP Kings Basketball team split its series with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The Queens Basketball team picked up a pair of victories over the Rattlers. The RDP Queens Hockey team dropped its games to the Lakeland College Rustlers. The Kings Hockey team was edged by the Concordia University Thunder. The RDP Volleyball squads defeated the Rattlers in Medicine Hat. The Kings Futsal team earned a win and the Queens tied the Broncos on the road.

Here is a summary of the recent competition:

Indoor track

Running Room Grand Prix #1 | Kinsmen Sports Centre | Saturday, January 25

The Red Deer Polytechnic Indoor Track team had an excellent performance at the ACAC Running Room Grand Prix #1 in Edmonton. The RDP Queens Indoor Track team took top spot, earning a total of 67 team points. The Kings ranked fourth (34 points).

There were many notable performances from RDP student-athletes.

Eiley Morrison (6.88) tied for first in the women’s 50 m with SAIT’s Amy Fallows, sharing the ACAC record. Loami Rautenbach (44.25) was third in the women’s 300 m. Georgia Sawchuk (5:29.22) placed third in the women’s 1,500m. In the 3,000 m, Sawchuk (11:42.86) ranked third.

The RDP Queens (1:53.15) continued their dominance in the relay races, placing first in the 4×200 m. Morrison, Alissa Berwick, Kammy Park and Rautenbach were members of this squad.

The Queens (4:28.27), comprised of Zoey Longman, Myah Cota, Justine Larson and Rautenbach, also solidified top spot in the women’s 4×400 m relay.

In the men’s 50 m, Andrew Warnick (6.28) finished fourth. Mbagara Gacheru (38.93) was sixth in the men’s 300 m. In the 1,500 m, Jordan Coen (4:21.17) was second. Japhet Kipkosgei (9:47.02) placed fourth in the men’s 3,000 m.

Warnick, Taelum Henfry, Kipkosgei and Gacheru (1:41.05) achieved fourth in the men’s 4×200 m relay. The RDP Kings (3:46.51) earned fourth in the men’s 4×400 m relay. Kipkosgei, Leland Lusk, Owen House and Coen comprised this team.

Basketball

RDP Queens vs Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 24

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team earned a 71-50 decision over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. Jayden Demchuk (Practical Nurse Diploma) scored a game-high 20 points and added 13 rebounds for the Queens.

Queens vs Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 25

The third place RDP Queens (10-5) picked up a 74-48 victory over the fifth seed Rattlers (6-9) at home. Demchuk contributed 22 points and led both teams in scoring.

RDP Kings vs Medicine Hat | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 24

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team was shaded 84-82 by the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. Cole Wicker led the Kings with 22 points.

Kings vs Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 25

The sixth place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (6-9) defeated the Rattlers by 16 points (99-83). Both Wicker and Deandre Rowe scored 21 points for the Polytechnic. The Rattlers (8-7) are tied for fourth in the ACAC Men’s Basketball South Division.

Hockey

Queens vs Rustlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 24

The RDP Queens Hockey team was downed 6-4 by the Lakeland College Rustlers. Tasha Barsby (Bachelor of Science) scored twice for the Polytechnic. Ardrossan’s Rylee Mepham and Prince Albert’s Alli Soyko added goals for the Queens.

Queens at Rustlers | Saturday, January 25

The third place Queens (10W-6L-1- OTL) were edged 4-3 by the top seed Rustlers (17W-2L-0 OTL) on the road. Mia McGregor, Barsby and Soyko found the back of the net for the Queens.

RDP Kings at Concordia University | Friday, January 24

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team was defeated 6-4 by the Concordia University Thunder. Holden Knights, Nolan Doell, Tristan Baumung and Alex Bernauer scored for the Kings.

Kings vs Thunder | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 25

The third place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (9W-6L-3 OTL was shaded 6-5 by the Concordia University Thunder in a shootout. Kevin Minnoch, Deegan Mofford, Ryland McNinch, Kasey Hiemstra and Doell recorded goals for RDP.

The Thunder (8W-9L-1 OTL) rank fifth in the league.

Futsal

Queens at Olds College Broncos | Thursday, January 23

The RDP Queens Futsal team (1W-0 L-1T) picked up a 1-1 draw against the Broncos (0-1-1) in Olds.

RDP Kings at Olds College | Thursday, January 23

The Kings (1W-1L) defeated the Olds College Broncos (1W-1L) by two goals (5-3).

Volleyball

RDP Queens at Medicine Hat College | Friday, January 24

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team swept the Rattlers (25-15, 25-12 and 25-6). Red Deer’s Lauren Junck recorded nine kills, six service aces and three digs for the Queens.

Queens at Medicine Hat College | Saturday, January 25

The first place RDP Queens (11-2) defeated the Rattlers (2-11) in three sets (25-16, 25-11 and 25-23). Junck had 11 kills. Sarah Mistol (Bachelor of Education Secondary) accumulated 10 kills, three digs and one stuff block for RDP.

Medicine Hat College ranks sixth in the ACAC Women’s Volleyball South Division.

The Kings Volleyball team defeated the Rattlers in four sets (21-25, 25-15, 25-22 and 25-23). Red Deer’s Colby Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce) led the Kings with 15 kills.

Kings at Medicine Hat College | Saturday, January 25

The second place RDP Kings (12-1) earned a four-set decision over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (19- 25, 25-23, 25-10 and 25-16). Kings setter Brett Theise totaled 26 assists, five digs and one stuff block.

The Rattlers (4-9) are seventh in the ACAC South Division.
