Red Deer Public Schools updates parents on data breach

Jan 23, 2025 | 4:44 PM

Red Deer Public Schools (RDPSD) provided an update on the PowerSchool data breach reported earlier this month.

In a letter to parents Thursday, RDPSD said PowerSchool will begin notifying students and parents over the next couple of weeks whose personal information was compromised in the breach.

PowerSchool had been working with RDPSD and other divisions affected during the initial investigation, but will now take over communication directly.

In the notice, they will provide a phone number to answer any questions about the incident. It will also include information on two years of complimentary identity protection services offered by TransUnion and Experian for all students whose information from the PowerSchool breach was involved. This offer will also include two years of complimentary credit monitoring services.

The widespread PowerSchool data breach impacted schools across North America and other parts of the world, compromising students’ personal information.

The district was made aware of the breach that happened on Dec. 28, 2024, on Jan. 7.

The data compromised included current and past student and staff information stored within the PowerSchool Student Information System, including:

  • Student names
  • Student mailing addresses
  • Dates of birth – students only
  • Student home phone numbers
  • Basic student medical information (in some cases), such as details about asthma, diabetes, or allergies

Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, Wolf Creek Public Schools, Wild Rose School Division were also impacted.

Meanwhile, Clearview Public Schools and Chinook’s Edge School Division were not.

Red Deer Public Schools declined further comment.
