Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Futsal season begins with victory

Jan 22, 2025 | 12:00 PM

After a 12-year absence from competing in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), the Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Queens Futsal team has made a triumphant return to league play.

“When we had the opportunity to return to league play, we took it,” says Mahziar Peyrow, RDP Queens Futsal/Soccer Head Coach. “We have the right players to be competitive.”

On Friday, January 17, the RDP Queens defeated the Olds College Broncos 3-1 in the Polytechnic’s Main Gym, which was electric with excitement. McKenna Leslie (Bachelor of Education) scored twice. Payton Erick (Business Diploma) added a goal. Goalkeeper Jana Leskewich (Bachelor of Education) had an outstanding performance in net.

“During our training sessions, we worked on defence first and I think that paid off,” notes Peyrow. “We knew when to put our press into effect and when to hold off and allow Olds to carry the ball. The Queens did that really well. We were able to put a goal away from that press. The fan support was great and amped up the girls.”

All thirteen members from the 2024/2025 RDP Queens Soccer team who have joined the Queens Futsal squad are from Alberta. Red Deer’s Leslie, Cara Lord, Jattu Sesay, Jaeda Marquart and Kennedy Van Arragon, along with Sylvan Lake’s Grace Smith and Isabella Pritchard, and Lacombe’s Anessa Harrod represent a strong contingent from central Alberta. Leskewich (Beaumont), Paige Kalbfleisch (Sherwood Park), Liana Dasuki (Chestermere), Erick (Devon) and Kyra Remekie, (Edmonton) complete the team.

The Queens have been adapting well to playing futsal.

“There are a lot of variables in futsal that are different than what we are used to in outdoor [soccer],” says Peyrow. “The players substitute on the fly. The goalie starts with the ball in hand if played out and pass backs are allowed at certain moments. Without offsides, we can push back quite a bit to draw their players further away and create space. It’s a fast-paced game and exciting.”

The Queens will also face the Olds College Broncos on Thursday, January 23 at 6:30 pm.

“It’s going to be an intense game against them,” says Peyrow. “Olds will be hungry, so we have to make sure we’re smart and play our game.”

The results from the two games against Olds will count toward the two South Regionals at Lethbridge Polytechnic (February 1-2, 2025) and Olds College of Agriculture & Technology (February 22-23, 2025).

“We’re here to compete,” adds Peyrow. “We have to stay focused and really go for it.”

After both regionals have been completed, their combined results will determine the top three teams from both the North and South Regionals. These six squads will advance to the ACAC Women’s Futsal Championship hosted by Lakeland College March 7-9, 2025.
