Young central Albertan to perform solo with Red Deer Symphony Orchestra Feb. 1

Jan 17, 2025 | 11:48 AM

A young musician from the Red Deer area is going to have quite the evening on Feb. 1.

That’s when 18-year-old Evangeline Kure will perform solo for the first time, and she gets to do it in concert with the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra.

The concert, entitled ‘Surprisingly Symphonic’, will be RDSO’s fourth main show of their 2024-25 season series, and it will feature Kure as the winner of last year’s Red Deer Festival of the Performing Arts.

Kure and the RDSO will feature Haydn’s ‘Surprise’ Symphony, as well as the Canadian classic Log Driver’s Waltz, and more, in a performance the organization says will captivate, entertain, and inspire music lovers of all ages.

“Music has always been a big part of my family’s life, and it kind of became a family tradition where when we reached a certain age, we could start our own instrument,” Kure told rdnewsNOW.

“I chose the cello because as a seven-year-old, I mostly just wanted to sit down.”

Kure’s older sister has a Master’s Degree in viola from the prestigious Peabody Institute in Baltimore, she added.

For the teen, who’ll be performing the first movement of Georg Matthias Monn’s cello concerto in G minor, it’s been over a decade that she’s been studying cello and music in general under teacher Janet Kuschak. To boot, she’s a proficient singer and piano player.

In recent years, Kure has performed with the Lacombe-based Rosedale Valley String Orchestra’s cello section.

“Performing solo is a new thing for me. It’s definitely exciting that I get to have this experience of a lifetime, but it’s nerve-wracking because I will be playing in front of so many people,” she said, noting she’s unsure if a full-blown career playing music is what lies ahead.

“I know all my hard work has paid off, and that I can play in a setting where it’s professional. I’ve reached the point where I’m like, ‘Yes, I’ve done the work and this is what I have to show for it,’ and that’s encouraging.”

The RDSO, in its 38th season, presents ‘Surprisingly Symphonic’, Feb. 1 at the RDP Arts Centre.
