This week in RDP Athletics: Jan. 17-19

This week, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Futsal teams will begin the ACAC season. The RDP Basketball teams will play the St. Mary’s University Lightning twice. The Kings and Queens Hockey teams will meet the NAIT Ooks. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, Queens and Mixed Curling teams will look to continue their strong performances at the Winter Regional in Edmonton.

Here is a summary of the upcoming competition:

Futsal

RDP Queens vs Olds College | Main Gym | Friday, January 17 | 6 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Futsal team will host the Olds College Broncos to open their season. The Queens are comprised of 13 talented student-athletes who also competed on the RDP Queens Soccer team.

Kings vs Broncos | Main Gym | Friday, January 17 | 7:30 p.m.

The RDP Kings Futsal team will challenge the Olds College Broncos at home. Twelve members of the Kings Soccer team will participate in Futsal.

Basketball

RDP Queens at St. Mary’s University | Friday, January 17 | 6 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team (8-3) will play the St. Mary’s University Lightning (8-3) in Calgary. Both squads are tied for second in the South Division with the Briercrest College Clippers (8-3).

Queens vs Lightning | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 18 | 6 p.m.

The RDP Queens will tip-off against the Lightning in the Fas Gas – On The Run Gymnasium. Queens forward Rachel Harvey ranks fifth in field goal percentage (55.1) in ACAC Women’s Basketball.

RDP Kings at St. Mary’s University | Friday, January 17 | 8 p.m.

The fifth seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team (5-6) will compete against the second place St. Mary’s University Lightning (9-2).

Kings vs Lightning | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 18 | 8 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will face the Lightning. The Kings have averaged 84.1 points per game.

Hockey

Queens vs Ooks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 17 | 7 p.m.

The third place RDP Queens Hockey team (9W-4L-1 OTL) will host the second place NAIT Ooks (12W-3L-0 OTL). Queens netminder Tora Ward has a 2.25 goals against average which ranks fifth in the league. Izzy Palumbo, RDP Queens goaltender, is tied for third in the ACAC with a 0.667 winning percentage.

Kings at NAIT | Friday, January 17 | 7 p.m.

The third seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (8W-5L-1 OTL) will face-off against the fifth place NAIT Ooks (6W-7L-1 OTL) on the road. The Kings have killed off 81.7 per cent of their penalties, ranking second in the league.

RDP Kings vs NAIT | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 18 | 7 p.m.

The Kings will finish their two-game set against the Ooks at home.

Curling

Winter Regional | Thistle Curling Club | January 17-19

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, Queens and Mixed Curling teams will look to continue their outstanding play at the ACAC Winter Regional held at Thistle Curling Club in Edmonton.

After the Fall Regional, the RDP Kings (3-1), Queens (5-0) and Mixed (3-1) Curling teams sit first in their respective divisions.

The results from the Winter Regional will be combined with those from the Fall Regional to determine the top four teams in each division. These squads will qualify for the ACAC Curling Championships hosted by RDP at the Pidherney Centre from February 7-9, 2025.
