RDP Athletics weekend recap: Jan. 10-12

This past week, the RDP Queens Volleyball team earned two home victories against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks. The Kings Volleyball team split its series with the Kodiaks. The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team defeated the SAIT Trojans. The Kings Hockey team picked up an important win against SAIT. The RDP Queens Basketball team earned one win in Lethbridge. The Kings Basketball squad dropped both road games against the Kodiaks.

Volleyball

RDP Queens vs Kodiaks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 10

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team defeated the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks in five sets (17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-10).

Maria Brouwer, Queens setter, had 32 assists, two digs, two aces and one kill.

Queens vs Kodiaks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 11

The first place Queens (9-2) downed the sixth seed Kodiaks (2-9) in four sets (25-16, 20-25, 25-18 and 27- 25). Rachel Perry (Business Diploma) had 13 kills (0.600), nine digs, three aces and two assists in the Queens’ seventh consecutive victory.

Kings vs Kodiaks | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 10

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team swept the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks in three sets (25-21, 25-21 and 25-18). Colby Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce) led the Kings with 14 kills (0.812).

The first place RDP Kings (10-1) were edged by the second seed Kodiaks (9-2) in five sets (25-14, 21-25, 25-19, 14-25 and 11-15). Swift Current’s Brett Theise, Kings setter, totaled 37 assists, six digs and one stuff block.

Hockey

Queens vs Trojans | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 10

The third place RDP Queens Hockey team (9W-4L-1 OTL) earned a 3-0 shutout win against the fifth place SAIT Trojans (2W-9L-2 OTL). Kyla Hansel, Kaedence Mollin and Fiona Sirovyak scored for the Polytechnic. Queens goaltender Tora Ward (Bachelor of Education) made 16 saves.

Kings at Trojans | Winsport | Friday, January 10

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team experienced a 7-4 setback agaist the SAIT Trojans in Calgary. Deegan Moffard and Sean Michalevich scored goals for the Kings. Dawson Leroux (Bachelor of Business Administration) added a pair of markers for RDP.

RDP Kings vs SAIT | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 11

The third place Kings (8W-5L-1 OTL) picked up a 4-0 shutout victory over the top seed Trojans (11W-2L-1 OTL) at home. Alex Bernauer (Business Diploma) scored twice for the Kings. Nathan DeGraves and Holden Knights added singles. Kings goaltender Joel Favreau had a tremendous game, making all 27 saves in his first ACAC start.

Basketball

RDP Queens at Lethbridge Polytechnic | Friday, January 10

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team was downed 49-41 by the Kodiaks at Lethbridge Polytechnic. Rachel Harvey led the Queens with 16 points.

Queens at Kodiaks | Saturday, January 11

The second place Queens (8-3) picked up a 60-42 win over the fifth seed Kodiaks (6-5). Sherwood Park’s Salome Nuako scored 15 points for RDP.

RDP Kings at Lethbridge Polytechnic | Friday, January 10

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team was edged 92-91 by the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks. Jose Mauro (Business Certificate) powered the Kings’ offence with 26 points.

Kings at Kodiaks | Saturday, January 11

The fifth seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (5-6) were defeated 79-71 by the third place Kodiaks (7-4). Deandre Rowe (University Arts) scored 24 points for RDP.
