Sylvan Lake cancels events due to unsafe ice conditions

Jan 10, 2025 | 9:32 AM

The Town of Sylvan Lake has cancelled their upcoming Big Jig and Polar Dip events citing unsafe ice conditions.

The Polar Dip is a part of the Big Jig Ice Fishing Derby which were set to take place from Jan. 17-19.

This comes after four vehicles broke through the ice over a nine-day span, despite multiple recommendations from RCMP to keep heavy equipment off the ice.

The Town said in a media release an email has been sent out to registered participants of the event, and refunds will be issued.

“The safety of participants, spectators and staff are the town’s top priority when hosting these, or any other events,” stated a town release.
