Rebels sign goaltender Matthew Kondro

Jan 7, 2025 | 11:30 AM

The Red Deer Rebels have signed 17-year-old goaltender Matthew Kondro to a Western Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement.

The move comes after goaltender Peyton Shore left Saturday’s game against the Regina Pats following an incident where he was ran over by a player. He laid on the ice for several minutes before he skated off the ice and to the dressing room.

He did not return to the game and according to Rebels Director of broadcasts and media Troy Gillard, Shore will miss some time with an injury.

Kondro, a native of St. Albert, Alta., was selected 171st overall in the eighth round of the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft.

He’s been added to Red Deer’s roster as an affiliated player and will dress for tonight’s matchup against the Saskatoon Blades at the Centrium.

So far, he’s spent the season with the Drumheller Dragons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and has a 3.30 goals against average and a .898 save percentage. In net he’s helped the Dragons reach a 8-4-2 record.

In the 2022-23 season with the St. Albert Flyers he was named the Alberta Elite Hockey League’s Top Goaltender and was selected to the AEHL U17 AAA First All-Star Team.
