Three students in the Chinook’s Edge School Division have been awarded the Julian Sacher Scholarship, worth $1,500 each.

The students, Leyton Fazakas, Liam Morgan and Sage Petersen, are all Olds High School graduates and were presented the awards by superintendent Kurt Sacher just before Christmas break.

“Congratulations to these deserving students,” said Sacher. “Each of these individuals embody the characteristics of academic excellence and caring for others. I’m impressed with their achievements to date and look forward to seeing their success in the future.”

Fazakas will be pursuing a bachelor of science degree at the University of Calgary, and his favourite subjects in school were math and science, he shared.

“Once I achieve my degree, I hope to inspire others to pursue mathematics and hope to teach and assist others in sharing my passion,” he said.

One of his teachers, Karla Pohl, said Fazakas was a great peer to other students and a confident, self-motivated learner.

Morgan is enrolled in biological sciences at the University of Calgary and said he hopes to attend medical school to become a doctor or medical examiner and help others.

He explained, “My body and brain have always interested me. How could I work with both to achieve success in school, sports and in a social community?”

Teacher Brad Clapp, now retired, said of Morgan, “He has an interest in the world at large. He is a very capable student but more importantly, has a hunger to understand the complexities of human society.”

Petersen is attending Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., majoring in biology and minoring in psychology and hopes to become a physical therapist.

For Petersen, during high school, “my passion for biology flourished, more specifically the anatomy and physiology of the human body. I find it truly fascinating to learn about how we function and the interconnectedness of all aspects of our bodies.”

Jana Kemmere, teacher and vice-principal at the high school, said she observed “remarkable character” in Petersen, as well as a “quiet strength and generosity.”

The Julian Sacher Scholarship has been given annually since 2020, to a student or students who have a strong academic average in Grade 12 diploma level subjects, are pursuing a degree in science, and show care and concern for the people around them.
