Alberta launches online map of place name histories throughout the province
Curious Albertans can now access a new online tool that provides information on the origin of different place names throughout the province.
The Alberta Geographical Names Web Map displays a fully mapped database with information on almost 9,000 place names in Alberta, officials say.
Users can find out how a particular place got its name or see if a historical figure has a place named after them by searching the map by name, location or the type of place.
“History is everywhere, and I hope the Alberta Geographical Names Web Map sparks curiosity in all of us to get online and learn more about the places around us,” says Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women.
