2-1 LOSS

Rebels round out 2024 with one-goal loss to Hurricanes

Dec 30, 2024 | 10:45 PM

The Red Deer Rebels wrapped up 2024 with a 2-1 loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes Monday night.

On Dec. 30, at the Peavey Mart Centrium, a clumsy first period saw neither team score, with the Hurricanes outshooting the Rebels 12-10.

There was a close call, however, as with about four minutes left in the first period, the Hurricanes looked to have scored following a deflected slapshot, but the goal was denied for high sticking.

The second period started off strong with a goal by Lethbridge’s Brayden Edwards at 4:55, his 16th of the season, with assistance from Kooper Gizowski and Logan McCutcheon.

The Hurricanes stayed on the offensive for the rest of the period, with the Rebels struggling to break out of their zone.

The teams headed into the final period with the Rebels trailing 1-0 and Lethbridge outshooting Red Deer 12-10 once again in the middle frame.

Shortly into the third, Captain Ollie Josephson limped off the ice following a collision with another Rebel.

Then at 4:40, shortly after, a back-and-forth in the Rebels’ zone ended when Hurricane Noah Chadwick scored his 10th of the season with help from Logan McCutcheon and Kash Andresen to make it 2-0 for the visitors.

The Hurricanes Trae Johnson then went to the box for boarding at 19:05, giving the Rebels a power play opportunity and a chance to pull within one.

With Rebels netminder Chase Wutzke pulled prior to that at 18:04, the Lethbridge penalty gave Red Deer a two-man advantage for the final 55 seconds.

Then with just 32.8 seconds left in the game, Red Deer’s Kalan Lind tipped in a point shot from Hunter Mayo and brought the Rebels within one at 2-1. It was Lind’s fourth goal of the season.

The game ended in a 2-1 final for the Hurricanes with Red Deer outshooting their opponent 8-6 in the third but Lethbridge outshooting the Rebels 30-28 overall.

“A lot of times you can create your own luck; we didn’t do that offensively. We did like our efforts, we did like that we maintained some pressure in the offensive zone, it’s more than we have in the last few games, but it’s something to learn from too – how much more we have to give to win a hockey game right now,” commented head coach Dave Struch after the game.

Struch was unable to provide an update on Josephson’s condition after the game.

The Rebels head into the second half of the regular season on Jan. 3, 2025 with a home game against the Calgary Hitmen. Puck drops at 7 p.m. and you can catch the pre-game show and all the action live at 106.7 Rewind Radio.
