Eight people are facing charges in relation to copper wire theft throughout central and eastern Alberta over the past few months.

Since October, Alberta RCMP, in partnership with community and industry partners, have been participating in an initiative to help address concerns around copper wire theft in the province.

To reduce the amount of thefts, the Alberta RCMP’s Eastern and Central District’s Crime Reduction Units, along with K Division Criminal Analysis section, and Community Safety and Wellbeing Branch worked with industry partners to determine areas being targeted and develop strategies to investigate, identify and ultimately arrest the individuals causing the most harm related to the theft of precious metals.

As part of the initiative, Alberta RCMP say they utilized a variety of techniques, including the use of a High Altitude Surveillance Plane (HASP), plain clothes investigation units, and the use of bait equipment. Throughout the initiative, Mounties note the HASP responded to 20 different calls to service, most of which resulted in arrests.

Police say the initiative resulted in numerous criminal code charges being laid relating to rural oil and gas lease site break and enters including:

The Alberta RCMP says it is committed to using all resources available to ensure the safety of Albertans and their property; however, Mounties note it’s important that everyone do their part to help. According to police, laser engraving your metal, securing your property with fences and cameras, questioning suspicious sellers, and reporting all suspicious activities can all contribute to a safer community.
