Youth charged in fatal Red Deer stabbing

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has laid charges in connection with a Dec. 28, 2024, homicide at the corner of 49 Avenue and 53 Street in Red Deer.

Mounties say the deceased victim has been identified as 43-year-old Red Deer resident Anthony Spiller.

18-year-old Red Deer resident River Roan has been arrested and charged with second-degree-murder.

Police say River has been taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody with his next court date set for Jan. 2, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

UPDATE: 8 p.m., Dec. 29

Red Deer RCMP confirmed Sunday night that a heavy police presence downtown on Saturday evening was in relation to a fatal stabbing.

Charges have not yet been sworn, thus the name of the accused has not yet been released.

RCMP say it was 10:28 p.m. when members responded to the area of 49 Avenue and 53 Street.

There, they located a man who’d been reported as standing on the corner with a knife wound.

Members attempted life-saving measures, but the 43-year-old man succumbed to his injuries.

An 18-year-old male was located and arrested nearby.

RCMP Major Crimes Unit is now investigating.

More information is anticipated on Monday.
