Dec 29, 2024 | 7:10 PM

The Red Deer Rebels were looking to avenge a loss on Friday night but fell 8-2 to the Edmonton Oil Kings on the road.

The loss on Sunday marks their third straight setback and their second in a row to the Oil Kings.

Edmonton’s Joe Iginla led the way with three goals, meanwhile, Oil Kings’ Noah Woodward and Gracyn Sawchyn each had three points in the victory.

The Rebels scoring struggles continued as they were outshot 42-22. They were also held scoreless on two powerplays and the Oil Kings potted two on six opportunities.

Despite taking the lead early in the first period, the Oil Kings led 4-2 following the first 20 minutes and led 19-5 in shots.

Oil Kings Gavin Hodnett got on the board first just three minutes into the game on the powerplay off the pass from Gracyn Sawchyn.

Just over three and a half minutes later, Rebels Carson Birnie knocked in his eighth of the season on a rebound from the left side of the net after a point shot from Jake Missura.

Captain Ollie Josephson gave the Rebels a 2-1 lead just 1:04 after their last tally. Josephson beat the goaltender with a one timer from the right side off a pass from Birnie on a three-on-one opportunity.

However, the Oil Kings retook the lead before the end of the opening period with three straight goals from Woodward, Marshall Finnie, and Iginla.

In the second period, Edmonton extended their lead 7-2, adding three more goals from Kayden Stroeder, Iginla, and Woodward.

Iginla completed the hat trick in the third period with less than two minutes to seal the deal on their second straight victory.

The Rebels will look to get back on track at home on Monday against the Lethbridge Hurricanes at 7 p.m.
