Advocates have been calling for a new family doctor pay deal that would see physicians paid on metrics such as how many patients they see and how many hours they work.

The Alberta Medical Association worked out the changes with the province earlier this year and have been waiting for the updated structure to roll out for months, according to the organization.

The association’s president Shelley Duggan said in September the delay to move doctors away from the current fee-for-service approach would hurt the health care system.

Premier Danielle Smith in October said the structure would be revealed “in the coming weeks” but there hasn’t been any announcement until today.

An Alberta government media advisory does not reveal any further details.
