RCMP charge Maskwacis man for murder 10 months after incident

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has provided an update on their investigation into a homicide that occurred on the Samson Cree Nation nearly a year ago.

Police say on Dec. 6 that they arrested and charged 33-year-old Donovan Rain for second degree murder. Rain, who’s a resident of Maskwacis, was remanded into custody to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin on Dec. 12.

Maskwacis RCMP were called on Feb. 11, 2024 at 12:15 p.m. to a report of a deceased person in a residence on 6 Mile on the Samson Cree Nation. Police found a deceased male who was later identified as 26-year-old Gordelle Soosay following an autopsy that confirmed the identity and cause of death.

At the time, the deceased was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton.
