The Red Deer Rebels road trip through Saskatchewan and Manitoba got off to a hot start.

The Rebels won their third-straight contest on Tuesday night in a 3-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre in Saskatchewan.

The Raiders pushed to score until the final seconds but goaltender Chase Wutzke came up big with 41 saves. Meanwhile, defenceman Hunter Mayo and forward Kalan Lind led the way offensively with two points each.

After a scoreless opening period, defenceman Derek Thurston opened the scoring for the Rebels nearly six minutes into the middle frame.

The Rebels rearguard walked in from the blue line and fired a wrist shot past goaltender Dimitri Fortin off a pass from Mayo on the powerplay.

The Prince Albert Raiders found the equalizer off the stick of rookie Riley Boychuk just over a minute and half after Red Deer’s tally.

In the third period, Red Deer retook the lead with a pair of goals to lead 3-1.

The first came with 16:42 left in the game when forward Samuel Drancak buried an opportunity in front of the net off an impressive pass from Carson Birnie.

Just 3:22 later, Mayo hammered in a one-timer assisted by Trae Wilke from the blue line for their second powerplay goal of the evening.

However, the Prince Albert Raiders didn’t go away quietly.

With 3:17 left in the game, Raiders Tomas Mrsic beat Wutzke to pull within one. The Raiders nearly had another one shortly after but the netminder stood tall between the pipes.

With the goalie pulled, the Raiders pushed for the equalizer but the Rebels held on for a much needed win in a tight Central Division.

Red Deer now has a 13-10-1-2 record to remain in third place in the division.

Their road trip will continue on Wednesday in Saskatoon when they take on the Blades at 6 p.m. mountain time followed by a stop in Brandon on Friday night at 6 p.m.
